Georgia’s Traffic Ticket Point System

Georgia drivers are subject to a point system that tracks and punishes traffic ticket violations they receive over time. For certain offenses, the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) adds points to the driver’s record when they pay a fine or plead guilty. Depending on the driver’s history, age, and license class, the accumulation of these points can result in severe consequences – like license suspension.

  • Will a ticket appear on my driving history when it’s written?   No. Points are not assessed until after the ticket is paid, which is considered a guilty plea. Also, not all tickets result in points. As a traffic ticket lawyer, my objective is to fight the ticket(s) and mitigate the charges so that you do not receive any points on your license, and the incident is not reported on your driving history.

  • What if I have an out-of-state license but received a Georgia traffic ticket? This is a more complicated situation. The issue here isn’t how Georgia would treat the offense, but instead how your licensing state would treat it had it happened there. Since the law in every state is different, an identical offense may have totally different consequences outside of Georgia. For example, in North Carolina speeding 80 MPH in a 70 MPH zone is a three-point violation, while Georgia would not assess any points. A traffic ticket lawyer can help you navigate through this complicated landscape.

  • Do points apply to minors?  The point system applies to minors and also carries far more harsh consequences than it does for over 21 drivers. In Georgia, some offenses have a different effect when committed by under 21 drivers. Additionally, the number of points needed to trigger a suspension is lower for under 21 drivers.

  • How are point values determined? Not all traffic tickets carry the same impact or consequences. Traffic ticket point values and consequences also vary depending on your class of license (i.e. CDL-holders), as well as your licensing state.

Points Suspensions for Georgia Licensees:

Under 18: accumulation of 4+ points in any 12 month period

Under 21 / Over 18: any offense for which 4+ points are assessable

Over 21: 15 points in any consecutive 24 month period

Though not exhaustive, here are some common Georgia traffic violations and points consequences for committing them:

  1. Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device / 3 POINTS
  2. Improper Lane Use / 3 POINTS
  3. Failure to Yield / 3 POINTS
  4. Improper Turn / 3 POINTS
  5. Speeding
  6. 15-18 MPH / 2 POINTS
  7. 19-23 MPH / 3 POINTS
  8. 24-33 MPH / 4 POINTS
  9. 34+ MPH / 6 POINTS
  10. Reckless Driving / 4 POINTS
  11. Passing a School Bus / 6 POINTS
  12. Aggressive Driving / 6 POINTS

An experienced Georgia traffic ticket lawyer can help reduce the consequences of your ticket, and in some cases, eliminate them entirely. Additionally, a traffic ticket lawyer can likely handle the entire case on your behalf without you ever having to set foot in the courthouse. If you have received a Georgia traffic ticket, call today for a free consultation with a traffic ticket lawyer. It costs you nothing and your future depends on it.
